The battle of the bands that I helped judge on Saturday, June 1st went well. Congrats to all the bands who participated.
Todd Cecil & the Slide were an interesting blend of cigarbox folk meets back porch blues, The Company were a spirited rootsy band pumping out feel-good music, and the Space Truckers brought back the power trio vibe of Cream meets ZZ Top.
The winner, the River Rats, wooed the judges with their tight Chicago-style horn arrangements and fiery guitar licks, plus they really looked like they were having fun.
My fellow judges were Dr Wayne Kirby (professor at UNCA), and Robert George who owns Sound Temple Studios in West Asheville.
Kudos to Anne Coombs and Rock Academy for hosting the event.
